Week Forty-Eight

Hey, hey,

We’re back in town for a few days.  Our trip to SF last Sunday was very pleasant….went to the Giants game and watched them win 9 – 5.  Discovered a new restaurant, Fino’s, in the Andrews Hotel on Post street…quite tasty Italian food, wide selection, vibrant ambiance, and crowded for a Monday night. While in SF also saw a very humorous movie (dark humor)….The Death of Stalin.  A satirical take on the Stalin regime in USSR, and what happens when he dies.  Steve Buscemi plays Nikita Khrushchev.  Check it out…you’ll like it.

My weight this week bounced around 132 and 131, then ended up this morning at 130.0 lbs. I’m not worried about it, but I do have to pay attention and eat as much as I can, as often as I can.  I think I have it under control and am gradually gaining weight, with occasional plateaus before putting on another pound or two.  I do, however, have occasions where my stomach gets too full and I can’t eat very much at the next meal (or I skip it altogether).  That happened at the tail end of this week, and is probably the reason for the drop in weight this morning.

I’m still scheduled for a sleep apnea study, even though my sleeping seems to be better this past week or two, with less snoring, less open mouth, and less breath stops.  I still slip off the pillow from time to time and occasionally wake up with foul taste in my mouth…arrgh..  Oh, well.

I had a PSA blood test for my prostate a couple weeks ago, and got the results this week….the PSA count was 3.5, the same as the test in January.  Anything under 4.0 is considered ‘normal.’  So those are good results, even though the PSA test is not considered the definitive indicator for prostate cancer.  I will get the news, and I presume recommendations, on the analysis of my MRI-directed biopsy via a telephone conference with my UCSF doctor on June 14th.  The day after that I talk to my Sacramento urologist, presumably with more analysis and a discussion of what to do next, if anything.  So in the meantime, I’ll continue eating and going to the gym.

Our next diversion is the trip to New York next Wednesday, where we’ll be checking out Hamilton and Book of Mormon, and sampling the New York cuisine.

So that’s it for this week.

And I’ll close with some thoughts on pan-handlers…

2017 Lenten Reading #35

They’re often at off-ramps holding sad signs

Or on a corner lamenting bad times

I never really know how to behave

Donate some dough or dismiss with a wave.

“Hey buddy, please, can you spare me a dime?”

That pleading refrain goes back a long time

Now it’s more like “Do you have some spare change?”

As our inflation has widened the range.

Both guilt and disdain compete in my head

They should get a job and earn their own bread

Or is mental illness holding them back

May not be their fault they can’t get on track.

How do I reconcile these two extremes

Mentally ill or the lazy who scheme

I am perplexed when they ask for money

Should I say no, or make their day sunny?

  1. Have fun in the Big Apple! (I’m still here – Will check to see if this makes it through your filters 😉

  2. Hi Chris,
You two are raising the bar among all of us for jet setting around the country, and I salute you. Actually, it’s delightful to follow you in your travels over the past year. From a serious assault on your very existence, to living a full (and somewhat envious) life of daily exploration, I salute you. Filled with admiration and love, I salute you.

Once again, your poem brings to life my exact feelings when encountering panhandlers.
    Your friend,
    Don

  3. Mr G’s –
It’s very nice to read about the trips and good times you and Mrs G’s are enjoying. Have a great time in New York. We just returned from a week there and had a great time. Take lots of money!
    Best wishes.
    Mr and Mrs B’s
