Greetings all,
From New York City…Manhattan, E. 45th Street near 3rd Avenue! Carol and I are on a jaunt out here with the Alaska Air credit we had from a cancelled trip last year. And we had some timeshare points we could use for a hotel here, so here we are.
With basically a free flight and free lodging (actually just prepaid, I guess you could say), we decided to splurge, and we got tickets to Hamilton. Wow what a show!
We had great seats, a wonderful theater, outstanding show, super music and lyrics, superb history lesson. Tonight we see Book of Mormon.
‘Twas a long flight out here. Plane departed at 6 am, so we got up about 3:30 am. It was a three-legged flight: Sacto to Seattle, then Seattle to Dallas, and finally Dallas to LaGuardia. But, as the airline described it, it was 3 nonstop legs (!?). Got to LaGuardia airport at 9:30 pm, took Q70 connector bus to subway station, then No. 7 subway to hotel…a piece of cake.
Let’s see….health-wise not much to report. My weight was 130+ for about a week, then it nudged up to 132.3 the morning we departed. Feeling okay overall…sometimes the back hurts, sometimes it’s ok. Sometimes I miss a ‘feeding’ and try to catch up on next one…usually not a good idea. I’m learning to sleep on my side occasionally, with only minor side effects.
New York’s been very pleasant except for a little rain now and then. Times Square was lit up as bright as day at 10:30 last night after the play, and it was packed with people–with many in costume. What a place, New York.
Interlude….it’s now Saturday morning. We spent yesterday riding subways and exploring Brooklyn, then last night saw Book of Mormon. Very good, but not as good as Hamilton. Again great seats, but we both sat behind giants whose heads blocked center stage, so that kind of detracted from our enjoyment.
I had a picture of us on the Brooklyn Bridge, but somehow it got lost in the electronics, so I’ll just close with a poem.
2018 Lenten Reading #31
What is the guidance that you seek
To whom do you expect to speak
A Buddha with a shaven head
Or some Evangelist instead?
Too late to ask your parents now
Long dead they cannot tell you how
The answer is not found in drink
Euphoric drugs won’t help you think.
Maybe a guru round the bend
Can tell you how it all will end
Maybe the Good Book tells it all
Isaiah, Moses, John, and Paul.
Wherever might the answer be
To help you with eternity
I hope you find it soon anon
Before you’ve packed your bags and gone.
Hi Chris,
I am beginning to experience travel fatigue just reading your adventure book, particularly the triple nonstop air journey. I don’t know what you are taking, but perhaps you would share with an older friend. Actually, it’s wonderful to hear of your immersion in to each day of life. You are my Guru, and offer the guidance I seek, as I stumble along, occasionally crying in my beer.
On another front, Kenny is finally home, and while still on dialysis, he can now begin taking real steps toward recovery.
Your friend,
Don
Me G’s-
Having just spent a week in New York in early May, it was fun reading about your travel there and things you did. The recounting of your travel day certainly proves to us beyond all doubt that you are feeling pretty good and have regained a high energy level. We did it in a fairly easy manner, with a nonstop flight to Newark and an Uber ride to our hotel, and we were exhausted when we got there! Agree with your relative ranking of Hamilton and Book of Mormon (Hamilton better). We saw them both in San Francisco. I’m sure it was really cool to see them in NY!
Best wishes.
