Week Fifty-Five…Interlude

So we’re in a bit of a limbo state now…no action on the prostate until early August, although I am a week into the hormone protocol.  I take a pill a day, of bicalutamide.  I believe it blocks the production of testosterone.  I haven’t felt any changes yet.  I went to a ‘prostate cancer support group’ this past week that meets monthly in either Davis or Woodland (I hadn’t been in over a year as the prostate situation has been on the back-burner), and asked the folks there about the side effects of the bicalutamide.  They said the side effects were not really that bad… maybe a little boob action, but not much, and a little decrease in the libido, but that should come back after I stop the pills. So, we’ll see.

Last week I started thinking I’ve got this weight situation figured out.  I got up to 134.7 and bounced around 134 and 133 for several days.  So I thought I should start adding more healthy foods to my diet, like broccoli, kale, salads, and cut down a bit on all the high-fat things I’ve been eating, and not worry so much about eating all the time.  So my weight dropped to 131 for past few days.  Change back to old strategy….eat more often, cut back on veggies, consume ‘good’ fats, and try to get to target of 136 lbs.

Not much happened last week….I had jury duty for three days…three days of showing up at the courthouse and waiting in the jury room to be called.  They had a ‘third strike’ case and went through about 200 panel members before they got enough for a jury.  We were the last panel, but were never called, and were dismissed after the third day.  Jury duty done for this year.

We head to Echo for ten days next week, so the blog will be quiet for the next couple of weeks, while we relax by the lake in the late mornings, and nap in the afternoons.  Read some books, take a few hikes…..

And on that note, here’s this week’s reading:

Mountain Morning

The craggy granite mountainsides

The hemlocks and the firs

Are reflected off the water

When the break of dawn occurs.

An early morning motor boat

Blends with the quiet of the lake

And the echo off the water

Trails softly in its wake.

High above the shoreline

In a cabin in the shade

A flannel-shirted figure

Pours some coffee that’s been made.

Beyond the cabin in the sunshine

Two readers hold their books

On the pier down by the water

Two others bait their hooks.

Another day has dawned upon

This place that is unique

Travails that haunt the other life

Must wait another week.

And while those troubles wait their turn

We’ll thank our lucky stars

To be lakeside in the mountains

With our boats and not our cars.

  1. Love this poem Chris … think you need to self publish 😉 … enjoy your mountain time!! Jeanne

  2. Hi Chris,
We just returned from a few days at our Houseboat on Trinity Lake with our son & his girlfriend. So your poem really resonated, as did the one from Week 54. You are the embodiment of “walking on the sunny side of the street”.

I applaud your preparation for the radiation road ahead. Between the mountain lake, and the Alaskan adventure, both body and spirit well be ready for next challenge.

Thanks for sharing lunch with us last week. Ruth and I love our time spent with you, and look forward to seeing you after Alaska. I know you will immerse yourselves in the beauty of it all.

    Your friend,
    Don

  3. Hello Mr G’s –
It was great seeing you and Carol a few weeks ago but it appears that the in-person interaction has somehow contributed to me slacking off on commenting on your past few blog postings. I’ll slip something in now as it sounds like you may not be posting this coming Saturday (tomorrow). While addressing the “prostate thing” appears to pose another challenge it sounds like you have gotten excellent medical advice and have made a very sound decision on treatment with good prospects for success. Also, it makes us happy to hear of all the fun and exciting things you and Mrs G’s are doing (Echo, Alaska, Mexico, etc.).Have a great time at Echo (sounds like you are there now). Best wishes from the B’s.
    Mr B’s
